Overview

As our Supervisor Customs & Compliance, you will be responsible for conducting customs business in accordance with the following: ensuring compliance with all Customs requirements and managing, directing and maintaining overall customs related compliance procedures for both imported and exported products. You will also be responsible for reviewing, auditing, and consolidating imported shipments as well as seeking and implementing cost savings or value-added opportunities within the Customs and Merchandising department. Though primarily allocated to the OTC business, this position is also accountable to MindWare, and SmileMakers. The assignment of the percentage of time allotted to each business may be modified by the company in its discretion to meet business needs.

Detailed Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  1. Manages all inbound and outbound shipment Customs compliance
  2. Trains, develops and manages Customs team
  3. Directs, coaches and mentors staff to ensure engagement and productivity levels are maintained; provides regular and consistent feedback and communication throughout the year and during goal setting and follow-up sessions and performance reviews
  4. Audits and approves all invoices related to imports and exports
  5. Manages Customs Team work to achieve Customs and departmental requirement
  6. Maintain current C-TPAT certification
  7. Maintain and enhance SOPs as required in the C-TPAT profile
  8. Develops and implements appropriate policies, strategies, and procedures to ensure the company’s Customs compliance, both for Imports and Exports
  9. Remains current on and communicates all new or revised US import and export regulatory requirements to ensure continued company compliance
  10. Builds strong working relationships with the local US Customs officers
  11. Interfaces with US Government agencies involved in import/export regulations
  12. Assists these agencies with requests for information or investigations in a factual and timely manner
  13. Maintains record keeping processes and archives of entry records
  14. Ensures data integrity as related to tariff classification, country of origin, and value information declared to US Customs
  15. Conducts internal audits to ensure import and export compliance
  16. Communicates company policy, changes, goals and expectations to direct reports
  17. Develops, implements and maintains Standard Operating Procedures and Compliance Procedures for the Customs department
  18. Prepares proposals on recommended initiatives and manages the implementation of the initiative, overseeing the efforts of internal OTC staff and external support
  19. Resolves issues related to imports and communicates to leadership
  20. Provides periodic updates around key performance metrics and industry trends to executive management
  21. Supports Finance, and other operations as necessary, in data gathering and analysis
  22. Collaborates among colleagues, contractors and other divisional managers as required to assess and effectively implement cross-divisional improvements
  23. Maintains regular and predictable attendance
  24. Abides by all policies and procedures of Oriental Trading Company
  25. Must be able to attend face to face meetings on short or little advance notice
  26. Work requires in-person collaboration among colleagues and contractors

 

Marginal Functions

  1. Submits requisitions for import supplies and equipment to management for approval
  2. Performs other duties as assigned

  • Able to safeguard confidential information on a daily basis

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a Logistics discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licensed Customs Broker License

 

Experience

  • Minimum three years experience with US Custom Compliance
  • Minimum two years experience in high volume distribution or fulfillment environments
  • Experience in negotiations and cost analysis
  • Previous experience managing a team

 

Other Qualifications

  • Able to perform the functions of the job in a safe manner
